Tazkiyatun Nafs means the purification of the soul. It is one of the most important teachings in Islam because the success of a person is not only based on what they do outwardly, but also on the condition of their heart inwardly. A person may perform many good deeds, but if the heart is filled with pride, jealousy, hatred, greed, showing off, or love of sin, then the soul still needs purification. Islam teaches us that the heart must be cleaned, protected, and filled with qualities that please Allah.
Allah created the human being with both a body and a soul. The body needs food, water, cleanliness, and rest to stay healthy. In the same way, the soul also needs care. The food of the soul is faith, remembrance of Allah, Qur’an, sincere worship, repentance, good character, and obedience to Allah. When the soul is neglected, it becomes weak and dark. When it is purified, it becomes peaceful, humble, and close to Allah.
The Qur’an clearly teaches that true success belongs to the one who purifies the soul. Allah says, “He has succeeded who purifies it, and he has failed who corrupts it” (Surah Ash-Shams 91:9–10). This verse shows that real success is not wealth, fame, status, or worldly power. Real success is to return to Allah with a clean heart, a heart that believed in Him, loved Him, feared Him, trusted Him, and tried to please Him.
The word tazkiyah carries the meaning of both purification and growth. This means that the soul must be cleaned from spiritual diseases and also developed with good qualities. A believer removes pride and replaces it with humility. They remove jealousy and replace it with contentment. They remove hatred and replace it with forgiveness. They remove greed and replace it with generosity. They remove heedlessness and replace it with remembrance of Allah. This is the journey of Tazkiyatun Nafs.
Purification of the soul does not mean that a person claims to be pure or better than others. In fact, a sincere believer never praises themselves or feels safe from sin. They know that guidance is a gift from Allah and that the heart can change at any time. A person seeking purification always remains humble and asks Allah to keep them firm upon the truth. The more a person recognizes Allah’s greatness, the more they realize their own weakness and need for His mercy.
The soul can become sick just as the body can become sick. Some diseases of the soul are hidden, but they are very dangerous. Pride makes a person look down on others. Jealousy makes a person dislike the blessings Allah has given to someone else. Showing off destroys sincerity because the person begins doing good deeds for people instead of Allah. Anger can lead to injustice and hurtful speech. Greed makes the heart attached to the world. Backbiting stains the tongue and darkens the heart. These diseases may be hidden from people, but they are never hidden from Allah.
For this reason, self-accountability is an important part of Tazkiyatun Nafs. A believer must look honestly at their own heart and actions. They should ask themselves: Why am I doing this deed? Am I seeking Allah’s pleasure or people’s praise? Do I feel happy when others receive blessings, or do I feel jealous? Do I forgive others, or do I hold hatred inside? Do I love the Hereafter more than this temporary world? These questions help a person recognize the diseases of the heart before they become stronger.
Repentance is one of the greatest ways to purify the soul. Every human being makes mistakes, but the best people are those who return to Allah. Sin leaves marks on the heart, but sincere repentance cleans those marks. True repentance means feeling regret for the sin, stopping the sin, seeking forgiveness from Allah, and making a sincere intention not to return to it. If the sin involved another person’s rights, then a believer should also try to correct the wrong and seek forgiveness from that person when possible.
Repentance brings humility to the heart. It reminds the believer that they are not perfect and that they need Allah every moment. A heart that repents often becomes softer and more aware of Allah. It no longer becomes proud of good deeds, because it knows that even the ability to worship and repent is a blessing from Allah. The door of repentance remains open as long as a person is alive, so no one should ever lose hope in the mercy of Allah.
Dhikr, the remembrance of Allah, is another powerful way to purify the soul. A heart that remembers Allah becomes alive, while a heart that forgets Allah becomes restless and hard. Dhikr includes saying SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, seeking forgiveness, sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and remembering Allah throughout the day. Dhikr protects the believer from heedlessness and keeps the heart connected to its Creator.
The Qur’an is also a cure for the heart. It reminds the believer of Allah, the Hereafter, Paradise, Hellfire, accountability, mercy, and guidance. Reading the Qur’an with reflection softens the heart and shows a person what needs to change inside them. A person seeking Tazkiyatun Nafs should not only recite the Qur’an, but also ask: What is Allah teaching me? What sin do I need to leave? What habit do I need to correct? What quality do I need to develop? The Qur’an purifies the heart when it is read with sincerity and acted upon with obedience.
Good character is one of the clearest signs of a purified soul. A person cannot claim spiritual purity while being arrogant, harsh, dishonest, cruel, or unjust to others. True purification makes a person kinder, more patient, more forgiving, more truthful, and more humble. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the greatest example of a purified soul. His life was full of mercy, honesty, patience, modesty, courage, generosity, and forgiveness. Following his Sunnah is one of the best ways to purify the soul.
Purifying the soul also requires struggling against the nafs. The nafs often desires comfort, praise, pleasure, and worldly gain. It may push a person toward laziness in worship, anger in relationships, pride after doing good, or weakness in front of temptation. A believer must train the nafs with patience and discipline. They pray even when they feel lazy, remain silent when they want to speak harmful words, forgive when anger rises, give charity when greed appears, and turn away from sin when desire calls them toward it.
This struggle is not easy, but it is part of the path to Allah. The believer may fall many times, but they continue rising again through repentance. Tazkiyatun Nafs is not about becoming perfect overnight. It is about making sincere effort every day. Even small steps, when done consistently for Allah, can bring great change to the heart over time.
Good company plays a major role in purifying the soul. Righteous friends remind a person of Allah, encourage good deeds, and help them stay away from sin. Bad company can make sins seem normal and slowly harden the heart. A believer should choose companions who increase their faith, improve their character, and remind them of the Hereafter. The people around us often influence what we love, what we speak about, and how we live.
Another important part of Tazkiyatun Nafs is reducing attachment to the world. Islam does not forbid a person from earning, owning, or enjoying halal blessings. However, the heart should not become enslaved to the dunya. Wealth, beauty, fame, and status are temporary. They can benefit a person if used for good, but they can destroy the heart if they become the main purpose of life. A purified soul uses the world as a means to please Allah, not as an end in itself.
Humility is also essential. A person who is truly working on their soul does not look down on others. They do not think, “I am better than this person.” Instead, they fear for themselves and ask Allah for steadfastness. They understand that a sinner may repent and become beloved to Allah, while a proud worshipper may fall because of arrogance. The purified heart sees its own faults before looking at the faults of others.
Sincerity is the foundation of all purification. Every good deed should be done for Allah, not for praise, attention, reputation, or status. Showing off is dangerous because it turns worship into a performance. A sincere believer hides some good deeds between themselves and Allah. They are more concerned about whether Allah accepts their actions than whether people notice them. Sincerity gives life to worship and light to the heart.
The signs of a purified soul include love for Allah, fear of displeasing Him, quick repentance after sin, humility, patience during hardship, gratitude during ease, kindness toward people, control of anger, contentment with Allah’s decree, and love for the Hereafter. A purified soul does not mean a sinless soul. It means a soul that keeps returning to Allah, keeps fighting its weaknesses, and keeps seeking His pleasure.
The journey of Tazkiyatun Nafs begins with honesty. A person must admit their weaknesses and stop making excuses for sins. They should begin with the obligations, especially the five daily prayers, because no soul can be purified while neglecting what Allah has made obligatory. Then they should increase in Qur’an, dhikr, dua, repentance, charity, fasting, and good deeds. They should work on one bad habit at a time and replace it with something better.
Most importantly, a believer must ask Allah to purify their heart. No one can purify themselves without Allah’s help. The heart belongs to Allah, and He is the One who turns it, cleans it, and fills it with light. A person should often make dua for a clean heart, sincere faith, good character, and protection from the diseases of the soul.
Tazkiyatun Nafs is a lifelong journey. It is not completed in one day, one Ramadan, or one emotional moment. It requires patience, effort, repentance, and trust in Allah. Some days the believer may feel strong, and other days they may feel weak. What matters is that they never stop returning to Allah.
In the end, everything in this world will pass away. Wealth will end, beauty will fade, status will disappear, and people’s praise will be forgotten. But the one who comes to Allah with a sound heart will be truly successful. A purified soul is one of the greatest blessings a person can have, because it brings peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.
May Allah purify our hearts, forgive our sins, protect us from pride, jealousy, hatred, greed, and heedlessness, beautify our character, strengthen our faith, and make us among those who return to Him with a pure and peaceful heart. Ameen.
